Introducing the one and only educational gas expansion pycnometer EduPyc™ 101
The Edu-Pyc™ 101 is a simple, complete, and highly affordable gas (Helium) pycnometer, where students can gain hands-on experience by manual operation of the hardware. The open design provides direct view of the hardware and allows for easy understanding of the expansion gas principle used in modern pycnometers. Very robust construction and safe operation (all metal, SS plumbing, high pressure rating) and no need for AC power, make it a very suitable instrument for laboratory exercises in introductory courses of many science areas, like physics, chemistry, material characterization, etc. The pycnometer is practically maintenance-free and it can last for years or decades of operation as the common hardware is easily available for any replacements or modifications.

The design features only mechanically activated toggle valves and therefore, there is no problem with heat build-up from electrically activated solenoids valves or electronics. The ubiquitous availability of digital pressure gauges powered by battery allows for easy replacement by another unit of desired accuracy. If only an occasional measurement of samples volume (density) is to be carried out, then this pycnometer if of huge savings for R&D work when compared to overpriced automated units. The user can modify it at will and auxiliary hardware can be added to implement other analytical techniques (e.g. permeability through rock cores, membranes, or packed beds of powder). Additional volumes can be added to the sample and reference chambers which would increase the range of sample volume measurements.
