Universal hardware for gas (air) permeability measurements of any form of samples

Design features of packed bed permeability cell hardware
  • Sample holder: mass  ~82 g, ID = 22 mm, (~0.87”), sample height  up to 44 mm (~1.73”)
  • This sample holder easily fits into large sample holders used in our pycnometers, e.g. Versa-Pyc XR, for determination of pycnometric volume and porosity
  •  “Zero flow resistance” design of sample support, additional barriers can be introduced for very fine powders
  • Easily dis-connectable bottom for sample removal or cleaning
  • Conical adapter (funnel) to facilitate sample introduction
  • Plunger for forming a packed bed of powder
  • Sample holder cover with fine mesh for uniform flow distribution
  • Two-parts sample holder housing connected by KF40 vacuum clamp
  • Top and side ports (1/8” NPT) in the upper part of the housing
  • 1/4” NPT and 1/8” NPT ports in the lower part of housing (180º arrangement)
  • Robust design for R&D and educational purposes for study of gas flow rates through packed beds of powders

Universal permeability housing for variety of sample forms (flat barriers, powders, cores, irregular solids)
Design features of permeability housing for variety of sample forms
  • Perhaps the most universal housing ever designed for studies of gas flow rates through variety of samples types
  • The upper and bottom parts remain the same to maintain the same connections for gas input (1/8” NPT), pressure transducer(s) (1/8” NPT), measurements of flow rate port (1/4” NPT)
  • The middle section varies depending on the sample type, diameter and height
  • Any flat material that fits between the arms (78 mm (~3.07”) separation) can be measured  and there is no need to cut circles. Typical active area has diameter of 52 mm (~2.05”) but can be customized.
  • Cylindrical samples of up to 76 mm (~3”) in height and 51 (~2”) mm in diameter
  • Rock cores or similar samples can be epoxied and mounted directly using appropriate adapters and O-rings
  • Irregular shape samples can be epoxied inside a piece of metal tubing
  • Packed beds of powders can be placed into the special sample holder (see above)
  • Variety of adapters and custom ones can be provided

Design features of gas (air) supply station

Gas (compressed air) station for managing flow rates in permeability experiments
  • Facilitates gas flow control (flow rates and pressures) for permeability measurements, e.g. from an air compressor
  • Gas input port (1/8” NPT) with gauge (11 bar, 160 psig), (behind the front panel)
  • 2-way ball valve to allow or stop input gas flow
  • Pressure regulator of the incoming gas and gauge (2, 4, or 6.8 bar /30, 60 or 100 psig)
  • Dual rotameters of various flow rates (0-50, 0-100, 0-220, 0-500, 0-1000, 0-10000 mL/min)
  • 3-Way ball valve to redirect gas flow into the target or relieve the gas from the target.
  • Optional manifold for handling two targets
  • SS tubing and high durability construction
